Works Overview

wetland_area.jpgWetland Solutions completed this project on-time and within budget. The success of this project was reliant on the complete eradication of kikuyu from the planting area, followed by a generous planting density.

The plant species selection provided for a greater bio-diversity, creating a more natural setting in keeping with the required council criteria for wetland planting.

Work included:

  • Weed eradication
  • Wetland & revegetation
  • Plant supply (5,000)
  • Planting

Background

This property is located in the Franklin District. The land had been previously drained and grazed by cattle. Attempts to drain the whole property had failed and an area of the property remained wet all year. The wetland area contained no scrub or wetland remnant and was dominated by kikuyu and Juncus effuses.

The desired outcome was to create an additional title to the property using the existing wetland to fulfil the Franklin District requirements for rural subdivision.

Purpose

  • The project was designed to restore the existing wetland to meet the ½ hectare (5000m²) of protected wetland (conservation lot planting) required by Franklin District Council for subdivision.

Scope

  • Stage 1 – Eradicate kikuyu and reduce dominance of Juncus effuses.

  • Stage 2 – Implement planting plan.

  • Stage 3 – Plant replacements & maintenance.
