Works Overview

planted_wetland.jpgWetland Solutions completed this project on-time and within budget. The successful sequencing and timing of events was achieved and is crucial to wetland plant establishment.

On-going monitoring and advice on plant establishment presented us with an opportunity to provide on-job maintenance coaching to treatment site personnel.

Works included:

  • Eradicate alligator weed
  • Wetland Planting
  • Plant supply (13,600)
  • Netting protection
  • Plant establishment monitoring

Background

The Kaikohe treatment wetlands receive all wastewater from the Kaikohe township. Programmed maintenance work of the treatment facility was required. Three existing sub-surface flow wetland cells contained no desirable wetland plant material and the wetland cells were dominated by alligator weed.

Purpose

  • The project objective was to re-establish a dense coverage of desirable wetland plant material.

  • Restoring wetland vegetation assists with nutrient removal, the primary role being that of increasing the amount of aerobic environment available for microbial populations, both in the water column and below the water/substrate interface.

Scope

  • Weed control

  • Control water levels to facilitate planting

  • Planting, plant protection and monitoring
