Project: Taumaranui Wetland Planting
Client: Ruapehu District Council
Date: February 2007
Contract: Wetland Operation Maintenance
Location: Taumaranui

Works Overview

taumaranui_treatment_wetlands.jpgThe client required one of four constructed surface flow treatment wetland cells to be re-planted.  A project requirement was that the planting be fully established within two years.  The careful selection of appropriate plant species and timing of events was crucial to achieve this.

Wetland Solutions completed this project on time and within budget.

Works included:

  • Weed control
  • Wetland Plant selection
  • Plant Supply (19,460)
  • Plant establishment monitoring

Background

The Taumaranui treatment wetlands receive all wastewater from the township.  The wetland cells function is to provide the final polishing of the township effluent.  The client required a dense coverage of plant material within a two year timeframe.  Wetland Solutions identified the appropriate plant species needed to achieve this.

Purpose

  • The project purpose was to establish a 90% coverage of desirable wetland plant material within a two year time frame.

  • Restoring wetland vegetation assists with nutrient removal, the primary role being that of increasing the amount of aerobic environment available for microbial populations, both in the water column and below the water/substrate interface.

Scope

  • Stage 1 - Weed control
  • Stage 2 - Control water levels to facilitate planting
  • Stage 3 - Planting and monitoring
