Wetland Solutions was contracted by Auckland Council Biosecurity to undertake the monitoring of animal pests within a significant wetland. Wetland Solutions is currently engaged in this project.
The focal wetland is the largest in Auckland with multiple land owners including private, Council, Department of Conservation, Fish & Game, and Forest & Bird who are currently encouraging the possible translocation and release of pāteke, New Zealand’s endemic brown teal.
Animal pest control has been undertaken for some time in localised areas of the wetlands surroundings. Large scale animal pest control is planned for the greater wetland area.
Auckland Council Biosecurity is undertaking the animal pest (rats and stoats) monitoring to essentially take a snapshot of their probable current abundance pre-animal pest control (within the greater wetland area).
Set-up of animal pest monitoring lines surrounding the wetland in a variety of habitats. Monitoring for rat and possum abundance pre-animal pest control, with on-going monitoring planned.
Pāteke and other native fauna and flora are prone to animal pest predation. Animal pest control is very important in enabling our native species to flourish in their natural environment.
